5 Rules to Help You know What to Wear for Family Photos...
Deciding what everyone should wear for family photos can be the hardest decision to make, but it doesn't have to be. There are a few rules to follow when choosing how to style an entire family, whether you have 3 people or 10 people to dress. Once you know the rules, it's easy! Some of you might be rule breakers, but I promise, these rules are best when followed!
Today I'm sharing some of my favorite rules to help you know what to wear for your next family photo session. I'll have more tips over the next few weeks to share!
Rule #1: You want to avoid everyone doing “matchy matchy” clothes when deciding what to wear. That means no white shirts and jeans, no tan pants and blue shirts and nobody wearing the same color on top. Instead, you want them to coordinate colors. 2-4 colors that go well together is ideal! Having everyone wear jeans on the bottom is totally okay, as long as you follow the rules for coordinating on top.
Rule #2: When it comes to patterns, keep them simple and minimal. I suggest only 1-2 patterns, depending on how many people are in the photos. The key to remember for patterns is to not let them be the star of the show. You want them to help tie everything together, not be the focal point.
Rule #3: For family photos, start with mom first. Dress mom first and then work your way through the rest of the family. This makes it easier to dress everyone else. This also helps know which style you're going with. Are you doing something casual for your photos or are you dressing up a bit? Figure out mom and then deciding what to wear for the rest of the family will easily fall into place!
Rule #4: Have an idea of where you're going to display your photos. If you plan on printing your photos and displaying them on the walls in your living room, think about the colors that the room is decorated in. If your living room is filled with yellows, oranges and greens, you probably don't want to choose blues, pinks and browns for your family photos. This doesn't mean that your photos need to be the same color as your living room, but consider those colors and how they will all look together.
Rule #5: Wear clothes that you feel comfortable in. If you don't like the way that your upper arms look, don't choose a top that is sleeveless. If your husband never wears Dockers, don't choose that style of pants for him to wear for family photos. He'll look and feel uncomfortable and it will show in the photos.
